What is a sick visit?

A sick visit is any office visit that’s scheduled for treatment of an illness or for symptoms associated with illnesses. During the visit, evaluations will be performed to determine the cause of the symptoms so the most appropriate care can be provided as soon as possible. Having a sick visit at the first sign of symptoms is the best way to start feeling better faster and to prevent any underlying illness from becoming worse. Prompt care also helps prevent the spread of any communicable diseases to someone else.

What should I expect during a sick visit at Bellevue Family Medicine?

A sick visit at Bellevue Family Medicine begins with a review of symptoms, followed by measurements of blood pressure and temperature. Next, our providers will review your medical history and perform examinations based on the specific symptoms, including:

• An examination of the eyes, ears, or throat
• An evaluation of the joints
• Palpations of the belly, groin, or throat areas
• Evaluations of the heart and lungs

Our providers also may order urine tests, blood tests, X-rays, or other diagnostic exams to obtain as much information as possible about the cause and nature of the symptoms. Once the exam is complete, our providers at Bellevue Family Medicine may prescribe medication or other treatments, and they may recommend additional tests.

What symptoms indicate a sick visit is necessary?

A sick visit usually is a good idea whenever an unusual symptom appears, including symptoms like:

• Fever of 103℉ or higher or a persistent low-grade fever
• Problems or pain with urination
• Diarrhea, constipation, or bloody stools
• Persistent or severe belly pain
• Bloating or swelling

How long will I have to wait to schedule a sick visit?

Sick visits usually can be accommodated the same day. Sometimes, a visit may wait until the following business day. In those cases, the providers at Bellevue Family Medicine or a triage staff member may provide care instructions over the phone to improve symptoms until an office visit takes place.
